Working with the Ancestors – The Boveda (Ancestor Altar)
In many cultures around the world, the ancestor altar is one of the first magical tools created by a new witch, and one of her primary methods of working with the spirit world. It was from her ancestors that she drew her power, her spiritual insight and through whom she performed miracles. She used her altar to feed and care for her dearly departed, and in return they worked tirelessly to ensure the family’s health and well being. Through this medium she could perform nearly any form of domestic magick – healing, protection, divination, prosperity (crops, livestock, children), bringing money, etc, etc.
Today, however, our Western culture has sidelined the ancestors – hiding them away in graveyards, out of site and out of mind, where they can be easily forgotten. Yet some of our traditions still hold shadows of our past veneration of the dead – such as the American observance of Halloween. Perhaps you acknowledge (and even make offerings to) your ancestors during Samhain, or more indigenous Day of the Dead Festivals. But only rarely do these spirits hold the same place of importance in our culture as they have – and continue to – in other parts of the world. And they certainly do not enjoy the same prominence in our occult traditions.
In this class, adept sorcerers Aaron and Carrie Leitch relate the history and philosophy behind ancestor work, explain how to construct your own ancestor altar (also called a Boveda) and teach you how to put it to use. Because working with the dead can be a dangerous practice if approached ignorantly, you will learn important protocols for working with your ancestors safely and successfully.
